What exactly is the stone?
A laboratory-grown sapphire: corundum, aluminum oxide, Mohs 9, grown as a crystal and then cut. Round, 6.5 mm. Its weight in ct, how it was grown, its treatment and its report number are printed on the label card in the box.
Will the blue look like the pictures?
A laboratory-grown blue sapphire changes with the light. The fifth image shows the same stone under three light colors: by a north window, under a warm lamp and in open shade. Expect it brighter by day and deeper in the evening.
What is under the gold layer?
925 sterling silver, with a palladium barrier layer between the silver and the gold layer. The gold layer is 18K, 2.5 microns minimum: gold vermeil, not solid gold.
Will it tarnish or wear?
Silver darkens with air and sweat, and the gold layer wears thin with time and use; replating is a normal service. Put it on last, take it off first, and wipe it with the plain cloth in the box when it dulls.
Should I take it off to swim or shower?
Yes. Remove it before swimming, showering, exercise and sleep, and keep it away from perfume, lotion and household chemicals. Not on vermeil: silver dip, cloths with polishing compound, toothpaste or baking soda.
How big is it, and which length should I choose?
The stone is 6.5 mm and the pendant 8.3 mm across. The 16 in (41 cm) chain sits at the base of the neck, the 18 in (46 cm) on the collarbones; both have a 2 in (5 cm) extender. The second image shows the positions on one neck, the fourth the pendant on a fingertip.
Can I open the clasp myself?
The lobster clasp is 12 x 6 mm with a lever you can press with a thumbnail; the sixth image shows it in a hand. Unclasp it before pulling a sweater over your head: a 1.2 mm chain is jewelry, not a rope.
Will the stone fall out?
The stone sits in a full bezel: the metal is closed over its edge all the way round, with no prongs to catch or bend. A knock on a hard edge can still chip any cut stone.
What comes in the box?
The necklace in a slide box with a 50 mm ruler printed on the tray, a cotton pouch, the label card with the stone's report number, a metal card, a care card, a plain microfiber cloth and an anti-tarnish strip. No price inside.
Care
Care: put it on last and take it off first; remove before swimming, showering, exercise and sleep; keep away from perfume, lotion, sweat and household chemicals; wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing and store in the pouch. Gold plating and vermeil wear thin with time and use; replating is a normal service. When it dulls: thirty seconds with the plain cloth. Not on vermeil: silver dip, cloths with polishing compound, toothpaste, baking soda or ultrasonic baths; they take the gold layer off with the tarnish.
